Our fishing family began in Petersburg, Alaska. Captain Jim Smith started helping his father fish when he was five years old. At the age of 21, he invested in a boat of his own: the North Star.

With over 20 years experience fishing Alaskan waters, Jim knows where to find the best halibut, salmon, and other Alaskan seafood. Chelsea met Jim while working on a tender for Norquest. They married, and the fishing family gained another generation with the birth of Connor, Aurelia, and Nora.

The Smiths' frustration with canneries prioritizing profits over people grew until 2020, when they decided to start North Star Halibut and Seafood Company and bring the same fresh, wild-caught Alaskan seafood they grew up eating directly to the consumer. They chose Arizona as their second home to be closer to aging family members.
